International visitors landing in Houston for the World Cup need a plan. Houston was built for cars — not metros. Here's everything you need to know about getting around, from the airport to NRG Stadium.
Houston is welcoming the world. Seven FIFA World Cup 2026 matches are scheduled at NRG Stadium, running from June 14 through July 4. Hundreds of thousands of international fans are landing at Houston airports ready for one of the biggest sporting events in history.
But getting around requires a plan. Houston is not Paris or London. There is no metro system that connects everything. This city was built for cars — and navigating it starts with having the right one.
Here is everything international visitors need to know about getting around Houston during World Cup month.
Most international flights arrive at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), about 25 miles north of downtown. Hobby Airport (HOU) handles mostly domestic routes and sits about 10 miles southeast of downtown.
NRG Stadium is in the south loop. It is roughly 30 minutes from IAH and 20 minutes from HOU in normal traffic. On match days, expect that to double.
Houston's public transportation is limited. The METRORail does not connect the airports to NRG Stadium directly. Rideshares surge on match days — fans have reported 3x to 5x normal pricing before and after games.
A rental car gives you freedom. Leave when you want. Go where you want. Pay a flat daily rate regardless of traffic or demand. For a group of four or more, it is almost always cheaper than rideshares across a full week.
"A group of four paying $5 per person per rideshare will spend $40–$80 on every stadium trip. A full week of that adds up to more than renting a vehicle outright."
Most international visitors do not know this until they are already in line. Airport counters in Houston add mandatory fees, concession charges, and taxes that nearly double the advertised rate. A car listed at $80 per day can cost $140 or more by the time you reach the register.
DriveonHTX is a direct rental platform based in Cypress, just outside Houston. Book online before you land. Sign your agreement digitally. Pick up your vehicle without standing in line. Transparent pricing, no airport markup, no surprises.
Pickup is at our Cypress location — about 25 minutes from IAH via Highway 290. We also offer Park & Ride pickup locations near both airports for guests who prefer a closer transfer point. Full pickup instructions and lockbox codes are sent by email before your arrival.
Book your rental before you fly. Everything is handled digitally — no paperwork at pickup, no counter, no wait.
Most visitors with a valid license from their home country can legally drive in Texas for up to one year. An International Driving Permit is recommended but not required in most cases — check the requirements for your specific country of origin before you travel.
Insurance options are available at booking so you are covered from the moment of pickup. Our booking flow includes optional daily coverage plans — no mandatory fees, no pressure at pickup.
