Top 10 Things
to Do in Houston
This Summer
2026

Houston summers are hot, but the city doesn't slow down. From Space Center Houston to the Gulf Coast, here are the 10 best ways to spend your summer in the Bayou City — with the right car for each one.

May 2026 · 8 min read · DriveonHTX Team

Houston in summer gets a bad rap. Yes, it's hot. Yes, the humidity is real. But the city is fully built for it — world-class museums, indoor entertainment, great restaurants, and a 50-mile drive to the Gulf Coast whenever you need a breeze. You just need a plan and reliable AC.

We put together the 10 activities we think are worth doing this summer — a mix of iconic and underrated, close-in and worth-the-drive, with a vehicle recommendation for each one.

"Houston is one of the most underrated summer cities in the country. Most people fly in, hit a few spots, and leave before they scratch the surface. The city rewards time and a car."

01 Space Center Houston
NASA · Clear Lake ~30 min south Car required
The official visitor center for NASA's Johnson Space Center is consistently one of the best attractions in Texas — and it's a full day if you do it right. The Astronaut Gallery, the Saturn V rocket building, and the Behind the Gates tram tour are must-does. Summer 2026 has expanded programming around the Artemis missions and the 25th anniversary of the ISS. Book your tram tour ticket in advance; they sell out on weekends. Give yourself 5–6 hours minimum. Kids and adults both leave genuinely amazed.
Best vehicle: Any — parking is easy. We'd take the Palisade or Expedition for a family group.
02 Galveston Island Day Trip
Gulf Coast · 50 miles ~50 min drive Car required
Galveston is the obvious answer for summer, and there's a reason for that — it delivers. The Seawall, Pleasure Pier, The Strand Historic District, and fresh Gulf seafood are all within easy reach. Go early to beat traffic (I-45 south backs up badly on summer weekends by 10 AM). The water is warm, the sand is brown (that's normal — it's the Gulf), and East Beach is free and wide open. If you want one day off from the city and some actual ocean air, Galveston is hard to argue with.
Best vehicle: Tahoe, Palisade, or Expedition — roof cargo for beach gear. See our fleet page for options.
03 Houston Museum of Natural Science
Hermann Park · Museum District Indoor — AC
The HMNS is one of the best natural history museums in the country and a perfect summer refuge when the heat peaks in July and August. The permanent collections — Paleontology Hall, the Gem and Mineral Hall, the Cockrell Butterfly Center, and the Egypt hall — could easily fill two visits. The Butterfly Center alone is worth the trip: 2,000 free-flying butterflies in a climate-controlled rainforest. Check the summer schedule for special exhibitions; they regularly bring in major traveling shows during peak season.
Best vehicle: Anything — Hermann Park has solid parking. Take the Lexus or BMW if you want to arrive in style.
04 Kemah Boardwalk
Clear Lake · 35 min SE ~35 min drive Car required
Kemah sits right on Galveston Bay and offers a full boardwalk experience — rides, restaurants, live music, and waterfront dining — without the full Galveston commitment. It's a great evening option: the bay breeze drops the temperature noticeably after 6 PM, and the sunset views over the water are legitimately beautiful. Landry's Seafood, The Aquarium Restaurant, and Flying Dutchman are all solid choices right on the water. Come on a weeknight if you want shorter wait times for rides and restaurants.
Best vehicle: Any — Durango or Tahoe if you have a larger group making a full evening of it.
05 Buffalo Bayou Park
Downtown Adjacent Best: Early AM or evening
Buffalo Bayou Park is Houston's answer to Central Park — 160 acres of trails, green space, and public art along the bayou just west of downtown. In summer, hit it before 9 AM or after 6 PM to avoid the peak heat. The cistern (an underground 87,500-square-foot water storage tank turned art space) is one of the more unusual attractions in the city and is open for tours. The Rosemont Pedestrian Bridge and Eleanor Tinsley Park offer great downtown skyline views. The Waugh Drive bat colony — a colony of 250,000+ Mexican free-tailed bats — emerges at dusk and is one of Houston's most underrated spectacles.
Best vehicle: Any — street parking and the Buffalo Bayou Partnership lot are both nearby.
06 Sam Houston National Forest
Conroe / Huntsville · 1 hr north ~60–70 min drive Car required
163,000 acres of East Texas pine forest, only an hour north of downtown. The Lone Star Hiking Trail is the longest footpath in Texas at 128 miles — you don't have to do all of it. Lake Conroe sits on the southern edge of the forest and offers kayaking, fishing, and lake beach access. The Double Lake Recreation Area has swimming, camping, and a boat ramp. If you want to actually be in nature rather than around it, Sam Houston National Forest is one of the best options within reach of Houston. Go mid-week; summer weekends at Lake Conroe get busy.
Best vehicle: Expedition, Durango, or Tahoe — you'll want cargo space and the clearance for unpaved forest roads.
07 Miller Outdoor Theatre
Hermann Park Free · June–August
Free outdoor performances all summer long in Hermann Park — Shakespeare, symphonies, ballet, national touring acts, and local performances on a covered stage with open hillside seating. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs, pick up food from a nearby restaurant, and catch a show under the Houston night sky. The schedule runs June through August with multiple shows per week. This is genuinely one of Houston's best free experiences and most visitors don't know it exists. Check the Miller Outdoor Theatre website for the full summer 2026 lineup and get there early to claim a good hill spot on busy nights.
Best vehicle: Any — Hermann Park lots are close. The Escalade if you want to tailgate-style before the show.
08 Houston Zoo
Hermann Park 6,000+ animals
One of the top-10 most visited zoos in the country, the Houston Zoo sits inside Hermann Park and features 6,000+ animals across 55 acres. The Africa section, the John P. McGovern Children's Zoo, and the Natural Encounters building (an indoor rainforest walk-through) are the standouts. In summer, visit on weekday mornings when crowds are smaller and the animals are most active before the afternoon heat. The zoo is also a short walk from the HMNS, so you can combine both in a full day trip without moving the car.
Best vehicle: Any — Hermann Park garage is a 5-min walk. Go early and pair it with the museum for the full day.
09 Discovery Green & Downtown
Downtown Houston Free park · evening events
Discovery Green is a 12-acre urban park in the heart of downtown with a summer concert and event series, food trucks, a water feature for kids, and a lawn that's transformed by regular pop-up markets and festivals. The surrounding blocks include Minute Maid Park for Astros games (check the summer home stand schedule), Xfinity Theatre for national acts, and some of Houston's best restaurant corridors. Downtown Houston is worth a dedicated evening — dinner, Discovery Green, and a walk along the bayou if you're up late.
Best vehicle: Tesla Model X or BMW for downtown — both have compact enough footprints for downtown garages. Easy valet access.
10 Washington Avenue Food & Entertainment Corridor
Washington Ave · Midtown Best: Friday–Saturday night
Washington Avenue is Houston's most concentrated nightlife and dining stretch — restaurants, bars, live music venues, and lounges packed into a walkable mile west of downtown. Summer nights here are lively even with the heat, and most venues are well air-conditioned. OKRA Charity Saloon, Bravery Chef Hall (a rotating chef collective), Axelrad Beer Garden, and Conservatory Underground Bar are all within a short walk of each other. Pair it with a dinner at one of the James Beard-nominated spots in the area — Houston's food scene is legitimately world-class and Washington Ave is a good place to experience it.
Best vehicle: Tesla Model X or Escalade — arrive well. Rideshare is also easy in this area if you want to drink without the parking math.
